If your teacher doesn't make the ride easy for you, then you can count on this book. It's organized so that you really feel as though you are learning Calculus from start to finish. I've looked at other books that seem to jump around from concept to concept, but the approach here is well thought out and the explanations adequate. Formatting (color of text, organization of topics, etc.) makes it easy to find what you're looking for if a section refers you back to a previously studied concept (or forward in some cases) allowing for the deepest understanding possible. Great Price "Calculus" for $173.56 Today

Calculus by Larson,Hostetler, Edwards book was the series of books I used in my undergraduate Calc 1-3 classes.

Quick Summary:
Pros: Good number of exercises, *some* good examples, lots of illustrations, lots of good guidelines and formula sheets.
Cons: Some not-so-great examples, some examples *should* add more algebra steps, 3 editions in 7 years necessary, cost of book-per-class versus 3-set volume is absurd.

Full Review:
All in all I think this book was pretty good through the year and a half run I had for calculus 1-3, and the last two-three years since then when I have tutored the subjects.

If you need a book with a TON of good exercise sets, this book works well. There's A LOT of problems in each section, and most of the time the instructions clearly state what needs to be done, and what concept is being used. There are times that notation or instructions seem a bit obfuscated, however infrequent it may be.

As for examples... most examples are good if you have a firm grasp of algebraic skills. Unfortunately, if you are rusty or not on par with your algebra, many examples can seem painful to understand or navigate. They don't always mention what algebra trick is used, unless the specific section mandates heavy algebra (like the section for Partial Fraction Decomposition as a tool for Integration). This is probably most troubling in the first couple of chapters, since solving most limits involve quite the few algebra tricks. There should at least be a section devoted to an algebra review.

One great pro about the book is that there are plenty of guidelines and formula sheets found in it. You'll find it quite useful to copy them down, or photocopy some of these pages to have a small set of 5-6 pages full of quick reference materials. There are great guidelines on Integration by Parts, as well as Trigonometric Integrals, Series Tests, and the first/last page of the text includes FOUR pages of useful Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus formulas.

The only other complaint that I have is the price tag for the sectioned versions of the book. 0 (on Amazon) for all three sections of Calculus isn't a bad deal. Paying -120 for Calc 1, Calc 2, and Calc 3 separately however, is a ripoff. If you are a Math/Engineering student that *knows* you will take all three sections, get this version.

This is also an issue I have to question... why three versions spanning from 2002-2009? It's not unique to this book, as so many books in College Education get "updates" in a 2-3 year period... but one has to question this.

Larson/Edwards Calculus - Brian L. Donat -

I was looking for a good refresher on Calculus and among my collection of books, I had another Larson Title on pre-calculus which was found to be a very good read. My older Calculus book by Schenk is less fluid and to my delight, this book, "Calculus" by Larson and Edwards, like the "PreCalculus with Limits" by Larson and Hostetler, is easily assimilated. The book is well sectioned and the explanatory text is clear, building naturally upon previous material and backed by a good cadre of examples. This book works with the reader and not against the reader. The tiring presentation of dry theorems that one might have found in other books is nicely overcome in this one by a fluid writing style and well structured material, backed by coherent examples and many thoughtful gems which enlighten the processes one must go through to solve problems. Applicability is demonstrated consistently by real world problems.

The book was delivered as new and the seller made good on a prompt delivery.

This book has helped me a lot. Not only does it provide a specific summary, it also lists the important equations and rules learned in the chapter. It even has problems you can work and has the full solutions. This book is a must for those who have boring teachers, fall asleep in class, or who just need a review.

DO NOT BUY, poor study material - Benjamin Chapman - Florida
This book is not a SOLUTIONS GUIDE but a STUDY GUIDE. If give you a few isolated example problems and then has a synopsis of each section. At the end of each section there is a quiz which does not resemble homework problems, or any test problems I have had. I would not recommend this. On the other hand the SOLUTIONS GUIDE is an excellent resource.

Another College Textbook - Kelly Christensen - Northern California
I have found that it is much cheaper to buy in two volumes, which is a plus as well as it being a little less weight to carry. As far as a book goes, it is merely another college textbook with dry writing that I have found mostly useful when I skip to formulas and homework problems. The examples, however, tend to be fairly confusing and not very well explained. Unless you are EXTREMELY self motivated, which I suppose you would have to be to teach yourself calculus, I would only suggest buying to coincide with a course.

Great product, came in time, although the shipping was expensive for how long it took for me to get it.

Single Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals - Melinda Legatt -
Like so many others wrote, the book stinks. It is an expensive piece of garbage. I can't believe professors use this textbook and I HATE the fact that my college does. If you read the textbook, you will notice that in its explanations that it omits some steps, leaving the user to wonder how they got their (They don't show you, they don't tell you. This is a textbook that should be collected and burned so no student would ever have to use it again. Also, as students, we have professors who assign homework problems from this book but when we try to do the problems we don't know how because the book doesn't give examples of the questions asked in the homework! It is driving me nuts and I hold a grudge against every professor who dares use this textbook. (Try not to spend your money on this piece of garbage if you don't have to; HUGE waste of money.) I also agree with those who mentioned Larson, much better textbook choice.
